APPLiA Europe’s demands for high-quality recycled materials

Creating a single market for high-quality recycled materials in the home appliance sector through clear EU standards and well-defined waste management criteria: this is the request put forward by APPLiA Home Appliance Europe, the trade association representing the European home appliance industry, to the new Cypriot Presidency of the Council of the European Union.

According to the Association, home appliances make a significant contribution to the circular economy, and achieving the related objectives requires the harmonisation of regulations and the establishment of a coherent framework that fosters international trade in recycled materials.

It is also appropriate to introduce a shared responsibility criterion involving all relevant stakeholders—manufacturers, retailers and online marketplaces—in order to optimise the collection of WEEE (waste electrical and electronic equipment).

APPLiA Home Appliance Europe further stressed the need to strengthen the mechanisms required to ensure consistent enforcement of rules across all Member States, through binding targets, adequate resources for national authorities, and an EU-level enforcement body dedicated to monitoring compliance.

The home appliance and consumer electronics manufacturing and supply chain sector will gather at the next edition of Applitech, the only trade fair in Europe dedicated to the sector, which will take place from 10 to 12 November 2027 at BolognaFiere, featuring a comprehensive conference programme.
