The energy crisis continues to push Europe towards an accelerated green transition, but for Brussels the change must also begin at home. Through the “AccelerateEU” package of measures, the European Commission is calling on Member States to implement concrete actions to reduce energy demand, protect consumers and strengthen industrial competitiveness in the context of ongoing energy market instability.
Among the priorities highlighted, the strategic role of household energy efficiency stands out. In particular, the home appliance sector is identified as one of the areas where immediate results can be achieved by replacing older, high-consumption devices with highly energy-efficient models. According to Brussels, this approach could help reduce household energy consumption, lower utility bills and increase Europe’s energy resilience.
The catalogue of measures proposed by the Commission includes concrete examples of support for vulnerable households to encourage the replacement of energy-intensive appliances. The suggested tools include dedicated national programmes, incentives for heat pumps, energy renovation initiatives and targeted financing solutions aimed at expanding access to efficient technologies.
APPLiA, the European association representing the home appliance industry, has welcomed the direction outlined by the Commission. According to the sector, the next step will be to transform European recommendations into concrete and easily accessible programmes for households.
For the industry, supporting consumers in choosing more efficient technologies is a key factor not only in reducing energy costs, but also in accelerating the ecological transition by making it more inclusive and socially sustainable.
In the new European energy landscape, efficient homes are no longer considered a secondary issue, but a central component of the European Union’s resilience strategy.
The home appliance and consumer electronics industry, together with the entire supply chain, will meet at the next edition of Applitech, the only European trade fair dedicated to the sector, which will take place from 10 to 12 November 2027 at Bologna Exhibition Center, featuring a rich programme of conferences.
