The home appliance sector is strengthening its contribution to Europe’s green transition, taking action across the entire value chain, from manufacturing and energy efficiency to repair and recycling.
According to the findings of the tenth edition of APPLiA’s Home Appliance Monitor, manufacturers have halved energy consumption in their factories, achieving a 50% reduction. Over the same period, waste has fallen by 18%, while water consumption has decreased by 14%.
Another key development has been the growing adoption of energy-efficient appliances. Since 2020, the presence on the market of appliances in energy classes A and B has increased 4.4-fold. According to APPLiA, this growth has helped shield consumers from energy price volatility. Since 2000, the cumulative energy savings generated by the use of more efficient appliances have amounted to 98.9 million tonnes of oil equivalent (Mtoe).
The sector’s contribution to sustainability also extends to product longevity. The industry’s repair network has successfully resolved 95% of consumer repair requests, while recycling operations have recovered 3.7 million tonnes of secondary raw materials from electronic waste.
“Our sector delivers clean technologies, local jobs and circular solutions. And it does so under conditions that are becoming increasingly unequal every year,” said Paolo Falcioni, Director General of APPLiA. According to Falcioni, strengthening the competitiveness of European industry requires “effective enforcement of market rules, a level playing field and urgent action to address the cumulative regulatory burden.”
The APPLiA Director General also highlighted the economic importance of the sector: “Europe cannot afford to lose an €80 billion manufacturing base.”
The findings are presented in the tenth edition of APPLiA’s Home Appliance Monitor, which examines developments in the European home appliance sector and its contribution to energy efficiency, circularity and sustainability goals.
The home appliance and consumer electronics industry, together with its entire supply chain, will gather again at the next edition of Applitech, the only trade fair of its kind in Europe, which will take place from November 10 to 12, 2027, at Bologna Exhibition Center, featuring an extensive conference program.
